This is Captain Roberton’s son, Jesse, posting, and I want to talk about some of the amazing things I’ve seen this summer. As always, the Puffins are plentiful at Petit Manan light. The lighthouse itself is an amazing sight, standing at 127 feet tall and constructed completely of granite bricks. This summer, I was introduced to the Whale Watch cruises, which are amazing. On every trip, we’ve seen some kind of whale. Whether it was a Humpback, a Fin Whale, or a Pilot Whale, they’d be around. On one cruise we even came across a school of White Sided Dolphins. There was a group of about 150 of them circling, swimming and playing around the boat. The most amazing experience I’ve had, by far, happened on a whale boat with two big Humpback whales. The whales had already been extremely active and we had gotten them up along the side of the boat, and all of a sudden, we saw a huge splash off the stern. A whale had breached, propelling it’s whole body out of the water. But this wasn’t the end. A second whale breached, on the other side of the boat. We began to run forwards, and on each side of the boat there was a whale breaching with fifty feet of the boat. They breached a total of 16 times and it was absolutely awe inspiring. The tours offer sights like this, and so so much more. I would reccomend any of the cruises, they all have their own things to offer.

July 12, 2010

My 86 year old mother, who is afraid of the water, had one thing on her “bucket list”: to see the Puffins in Maine. So my husband and I decided to help get that off her list. Extensive research told us the best way to see the puffins was up close and personal and not jus a circle around the island on a sight seeing boat, and Captain Robertson’s tours certainly gave us that experience. The morning started out foggy but it was clearing in the harbor, as we went out to sea it got a bit rougher with 6-8 foot swells from a previous weekend storm. We saw osprey, a bald eagle, terns, puffins, and so much more. Captain Jamie expertly handled the seas and we were remarkably close to the puffins. On the way back from the islands Captain Jamie stopped to check his lobster traps and gave us an idea about what was under the sea. We have so many photos and video of this wonderful trip to keep the memories fresh. Mom is talking about going back again (she’s still afraid of the water but really trusts Captain Jamie). We would HIGLY recommend this tour to anyone!

Captain Jamie here. My wife says I really need to blog more about my daily experiences, which most recently have been more incredible than ever, to tell you the truth.

We have had three whale boats go out so far this week. People are starting to take notice that we are offering a unique experience. I was out this week with my son, Jesse, 16, who is here for the month from California. He went on his first ever whale watches, back to back tours as a matter of fact. He had THE time of his life. He saw at least two whales BREECH fully out of the water, less than 50 feet from the boat! Captain Jimmy, of the Elizabeth Rose, who runs the whale boat for us, was even impressed and he has been out on the water for years! The sightings of whales are UP, at least 15 whales for these crusies. What a fabulous week on the coastal waters of Maine. Now let’s hope the weather holds for the rest of the season!

Shared some personal fun time with my family as well. My first mate, McKade, 3, can barely be pried from the boat! Our youngest, Brody, 8 months is facinated with everything and had a fine nap on the way back in. We anchored and had lunch and enjoyed watching the many other vessels that were out. What a perfect way to spend the day!
