Bird watchers
may enjoy a cruise to Petit Manan Island a national wildlife refuge
and home to Petit Manan Lighthouse. For more than
a century Petit Manan light has ensured the safe travel for passing
vessels. The lighthouse now provides a safe sanctuary for hundreds
of seabirds including our favorite Atlantic Puffin during the months
of June through August. Other birds that can be seen on the island
are Common, Artic, and endangered Roseate terns; Razorbills; Black
guillemots; Common eiders; Leach’s storm petrel; and of course
Laughing, Herring, & Black back gulls.
Now Petit Manan Island and its light provide safe maritime travel
for vessels as well as safe sanctuary for seabirds. Thanks in large
part to the PETIT MANAN WILDLIFE REFUGE the island is now a natural
seabird colony site. The light tower is now fully automated and maintained
by the U.S. Coast Guard. The island is managed by the Wildlife Refuge
responsible protecting the nesting habitat for seabirds.
Enjoy viewing
Puffins from the Mairi Leigh while they dart from their nests among
the granite boulders of the shoreline to the ocean
and around the boat while they dive for fish. The shallow draft of
the boat allows us to get in close where the big tourist boats can’t
so you can enjoy a “First Class” viewing of Maine’s
most popular seabird. Puffins come from offshore in June and migrate
out in late August.
